ABSTRACT

In 1950, over 150 million people in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) lived in cities. Due to a significant rural migration, the number grew to more than 360 million at the end of the twentieth century. This fact has generated a deep concern about water and soil resources. Facing this challenge, governments have made great efforts to improve an urban developing plan, focusing on water supply and sewer systems but leaving wastewater treatment behind.
