ABSTRACT

There are several themes that run throughout this book. None of them are particularly original, but we think it is helpful to set them forth here as overarching concepts in order to explain why we are who we are as human beings and how we got there. Good policing is about the art of persuasion. A police officer can use diplomacy, as in “Do you fellas think it is a good idea to keep drinking at this bar?” Or, an officer can use coercive force, such as “If you do not leave this bar immediately, I am going to lock you up!” Societally, it is better for all involved if officers learn how fellow human beings think and act-human operating system 1.0-so that diplomacy is used more often than coercion.
