ABSTRACT

Aberfan was a small Welsh mining town of only 4,000 inhabitants, situated 5 miles south of Merthyr Tydl and 25 miles northwest of Cardi. e town had grown to accommodate the family needs of the mining community following the sinking of the rst pit in 1869 by a private mining company, although the mines would ultimately be nationalized in 1947 when the National Coal Board (NCB) took ownership of the industry.
