ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the experience gained during the implementation phase of the Goal Based Standards (GBS) Standards from a Classification Society perspective following the initial verification. It focuses on the experience gained during the implementation phase of GBS Standards, the audits to comply with the GBS Standards and some related challenges from a Classification Societies’ perspective. International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) and its member Classification Societies developed their Common Structural Rules for Bulk Carriers and Oil Tankers as an element of GBS Standards. The fundamental assumptions and the general structure of GBS is summarised in the International Maritime Organisation Guidelines on developing GBS. The rule development process is embedded in the class cycle and is based on in-depth and expansive research work performed by the individual Classification Societies and IACS project teams. The verification process is based on a self-assessment carried out by submitter followed by an audit of the self-assessment conducted by an International Maritime Organization audit team.
