ABSTRACT

The world fi sheries production was about 158,000,000 t in 2012 (FAO 2014, Fisheries Agency 2013). Capture fi sheries and aquaculture contributed about 91,300,000 t (58%) and 66,600,000 t (42%) respectively to the total fi shery production. Capture production has been relatively stable in the past decade, but the contribution of aquaculture has been rising continuously and total fi shery production is estimated to reach 179,000,000 t by 2021, an increase of 15% over the average production of 2009 to 2011. This increase is mainly due to aquaculture, and Asia as a whole plays a key role in the aquaculture industry, though it needs a well-rounded plan to keep the balance between capture fi sheries and aquaculture in order to increase the supply of fi shery products and maintain sustainable development.
