ABSTRACT

Pathogen detection is of prime importance and concern in various sectors such as food, pharmaceutical, health care, and agriculture. Novel biosensing methodologies have been developed for rapid detection of pathogens based on the application of chromogenic substrates with specic enzyme activities. Chromogenic biosensing techniques are fully automated, delivering high selectivity and sensitivity to enhance detection and thus avoiding the need for time-consuming conventional and traditional methods. In addition to rapid detection, the choice of a wide variety of synthetic substrates allows microbial pathogen recognition simultaneously. This chapter deals principally with recent advancements in pathogen detection with particular focus on methods for chromogenic pathogen detection.
