ABSTRACT

Noroviruses (NoVs) are a group of small round-structured RNA viruses that constitute the Norovirus genus in the family Caliciviridae. The viruses are highly contagious, causing epidemic acute gastroenteritis that affect millions of people and claim over 200,000 lives each year [1]. NoVs are nonenveloped viruses that are composed of an outer protein capsid encapsulating the single-stranded, positive-sense RNA genomes. The NoV capsid is made by a single major structure protein (VP1) that is encoded by open reading frame 2 of the genome. The crystal structures of the recombinant NoV virus-like particle (VLP) revealed that the NoV capsid exhibits a T = 3 icosahedral symmetry containing 180 copies of VP1s organized into 90 dimeric capsomeres [2].
