on their development. This chapter argues that teacher and teacher leader development are essential and that there are ways for this to be carried out both efciently and effectively. It examines the why, what, when, how, and where of such professional learning and also suggests ways to evaluate its effect.

There are a number of myths around teaching and teacher training that need to be shattered, and they quickly are for any non-teacher who has stood in front of a class of 30 adolescent students and tried to get them to learn. They soon realize that an effective teacher has very high-level skills. Teachers need some innate qualities that have to be constantly built upon to get and keep their expertise at a high level. Why is it important to do this? First, education makes a difference to people’s life chances and is a signicant key to our future. It is directly linked to economic success, the status of people in society, health, and well-being. As both Bill Clinton (United States) and Tony Blair (UK) said when they were their countries’ leaders: “Education, education, education.” This mantra is repeated across the world from Rwanda to Chile, from Vietnam to New Zealand. If you want to get on, get educated.
