ABSTRACT

This chapter updates the information on nursing informatics in this new environment of health information technology (IT) and the new agenda and progress of the U.S. Office of the National Coordinator (ONC). Nurses represent the nursing informatics community at the highest level of United States Government Policy, Standards, and Meaningful Use committees and workgroups. As the volume of information system networks has increased in the past five years, so has the volume of nurses prepared to work in these environments. The priorities have widened for health information in the form of national and regional health information exchanges, interoperability, transparency, and the widespread goals for the electronic health record (EHR).
