ABSTRACT

Amazing structures, together with visionary concepts, became icons of a particular kind of architecture which differs strongly form the massive and monumental construction of the pasts. On the contrary, ephemeral architecture became synonymous of efficient, smart and also sustainable construction system of the future. Sustainability in terms of “lightly touch of ground” as in Murcutt’s words (Drew 2000) but also regarding the material saving and reduction to the essential, the minimum (Otto 2004). In addition, an architecture can be considered sustainable when it can be adapt over time or be dismantled and re-assembled where and when required (Zanelli 2003, Giurdanella 2010). All these characteristics made lightweight architecture more close to the world of industry, where production processes are controlled and optimized, compared to the traditional sector of building construction where the phase of construction is the most relevant.
