ABSTRACT

The recovery of all submerged aircraft evidence is usually done at the direction of the on-scene designated air crash investigator. The reality is that few survive an aircraft crash. The procedure usually involves the recovery of intact bodies first, followed by body parts. All body parts regardless of size should be recovered, keeping in mind fingers, fingertips, feet, and teeth can be instrumental in identifying occupants. All human remains should be removed from the wreckage whenever possible, bagged in the water, and lifted to the surface. Most small aircraft are equipped with a ring or harness designed to allow lifting the aircraft. Discovery of that lift point will allow the plane to be brought to the surface with the least amount of trauma to the aircraft. Most vehicles entering water can be safely exited; however, exiting a school bus that has entered the water is another proposition. Stolen autos are commonly retrieved from various waterways.
