ABSTRACT

An example of solutions addressed to people with disabilities increasing their self-reliance and capability for mobility through the building is presented in the article. The solutions take into account such aspects of creating public space as: information system based on maps and plates; signs of selected areas of the building, color arrangement, signs in vertical communication routs.

There is described the project PA-UNIV with non-discriminatory solutions. A methodology of proceeding for develop the solutions creating the friendly public space consists of four main stages. The first stage is identification the needs of people with disabilities including physical, sensory, mentally and cultural disability. The second stage includes audit of accessibility based on special evaluations tables. The outcomes of the audit are the basis for elaborating a technical project of adjustment of building space to the needs of people with disabilities and the last stage is implementation of designed solutions.

The object of the project was university building in Zabrze, Poland, which was being renovated then. The authors focused a special attention on the organisational issues of project related with transfer of information and way of cooperation between participators: architects - investor - construction manager - designers of accessibility solutions.
