ABSTRACT
The groundwater response to environmental change is a complex function that depends on climate, the land surface and vegetation dynamics, as well as aquifer characteristics and human infl uences. Groundwater pumping for irrigation has, in recent years, often masked or outweighed other factors, and there is signifi cant evidence of a decrease in groundwater reserves at a global scale (Wada et al. 2010).
